About Cancer Research
Cancer Research UK is one of the best-known charities in the UK and is one that is close to many peoples’ hearts.
Almost everyone will be affected by cancer at some points in their lives, whether through contracting this devastating disease themselves, or experiencing what it is like when a loved-one has cancer.
However, with the help of Cancer Research UK and the money raised by millions of fundraisers across the UK, the treatment of cancer has progressed with more people beating the disease than ever before.
The work of some 4,500 researchers are healthcare professionals is part or fully funded with Cancer Research money, proving that the money raised by this amazing charity goes straight to where it’s needed most – the frontline in the treatment and diagnoses of cancer.
The Charity’s Goals
The charity has four ‘purpose statements’, which help to clarify exactly what it is trying to achieve through its fundraising and research:
1. To carry out ‘world class research’ with the intention of understanding the disease in order to help treat, diagnose and prevent different types of cancers.
2. To make sure its research findings improve the lives of cancer sufferers.
3. To raise awareness among the public and among sufferers in terms of the choices they can make and the difference the charity is making.

Fundraising
Cancer research funds its research and awareness work through adopting many different fundraising techniques.
Much of the charity’s funds are raised through its network of 600 charity shops.
People donate their unwanted items and Cancer Research volunteers sell the items to the public for a small profit. Charity shops have really taken off in recent years as many people love the idea of recycling clothes and other items instead of throwing them away.
Another huge fundraising success for Cancer Research has been its Race for Life events.
Race for Life is a series of 5km fun runs that target women all over the UK, encouraging them to get fit and raise some money for Cancer Research. The Hyde Park event in July this year broke a record for Race for Life, with 17,000 women taking part in the race. The fundraising goal for this year’s Race for Life events is a huge £62.5 million! So far, over four million women have taken part in the events.
