NSPCC
The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) is probably the most high profile charity that acts on behalf of children in the UK.
The charity was established under its current name in 1889 and has since established itself as one of the leading providers of support for vulnerable children and families. The charity hopes to influence the government to bring in changes to the laws that may help to prevent child abuse. It also raises awareness about child abuse and campaigns for cultural, political and societal change.
The NSPCC’s work also includes running the famous ChildLine service, which provides free, confidential advice and guidance to children who are at risk or are experiencing abuse.
The NSPCC’s main aims, as outlined in its literature, are:
• To provide the “help, support and environment” children require to stay safe.
• To raise awareness and “mobilise” the public to take action against child abuse.
• To work with communities to help keep children “safe” from abuse and cruelty.
The charity’s Full Stop campaign involves high profile TV and media advertising intended to make the public realise they can help to protect children from abuse. The charity hopes that, through the campaign, cruelty to children will become a thing of the past as communities act to stop it.
Using an NSPCC-affiliated credit card enables you to donate a small percentage of what you spend to this worthy charity. It is a sad fact that thousands of children are being abused by the very people they should be able to trust. However, by donating small amounts of money often, you can make a real difference over time to this charity and, ultimately to the lives of vulnerable British children.
