WWF Charity Credit Card
WWF – World Wide Fund for Nature
Identified around the world by its panda logo, the WWF was founded as the World Wildlife Fund in 1961. It is the world’s leading environmental organisation, working with governments, businesses and communities to help ensure people and nature thrive within their fair share of the planet’s natural resources.
It was formed by a biologist and a naturalist, who were concerned that a lot of Africa’s wildlife was in danger of becoming extinct because of hunting and the destruction of many natural habitats.
The focus of the charity’s work soon widened to take account of the full environmental implications of human activity.
In 1980 – long before many of today’s climate change concerns took root – the charity’s World Conservation Strategy warned that humanity had no future unless we started properly caring for nature and the world’s natural resources.
At the same time, the concept of sustainable development began to surface – that is, living within the limits of the natural environment, without forgetting the needs of the generations coming after us.
The charity depends on its five million global supporters to keep it going, with volunteers and businesses supplying 90 per cent of its income.
Mission goals
To guide it in achieving its goals, the WWF has a number of principles. These include pledges that the WWF will:
* be global, independent, multicultural and non party political
* use the best available scientific information to address issues and critically evaluate all its endeavours
* seek dialogue and avoid unnecessary confrontation
* build concrete conservation solutions through a combination of field-based projects, policy initiatives, capacity building and education work
* run its operations cost-effectively and apply donors’ funds according to the highest standards of accountability
